What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating beyond what the body needs for temperature control. Underarm (axillary) hyperhidrosis can be genuinely disabling, ruining clothes and affecting confidence at work and in social settings. Botulinum toxin is a well-established, NICE-recognised treatment for it when antiperspirants have not worked.
How does Hyperhidrosis treatment work?
Sweat glands are switched on by nerves that release acetylcholine, the same messenger that triggers muscle contraction. Botulinum toxin is injected as a grid of small, superficial injections across each underarm, blocking that signal locally. The glands remain healthy but stop being told to produce sweat, so the area stays dry until the nerve endings regenerate.
