What are the contraindications of Deep Chemical Peel treatment?

We will not proceed with deep chemical peel where treatment is not clinically appropriate. Contraindications include: pregnancy or breastfeeding; isotretinoin (Roaccutane) use within the last six months; active cold sores, impetigo, eczema, psoriasis or broken skin in the treatment area; recent sun exposure, sunburn, sunbed use or a fake tan applied within the last week; waxing, laser, microneedling or another resurfacing treatment in the previous two weeks; a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring; a history of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or a deeper skin type where a deeper peel carries a higher pigmentation risk; known allergy to the acid used, to aspirin or salicylates for salicylic peels, or to nuts for some formulations; poorly controlled diabetes, immunosuppression or recent radiotherapy to the area; an inability to avoid sun exposure or to follow the aftercare during the healing period; unrealistic expectations, or body dysmorphic disorder; fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI, where the risk of pigment change is too high to justify this depth; any significant heart, liver or kidney condition, phenol is absorbed systemically; being unable to take two weeks away from work and social commitments to heal; smoking, which impairs healing and must be stopped well before treatment. Aftercare is simple: leave the skin alone, do not pick, peel, rub or exfoliate flaking skin; cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a bland cleanser, no scrubs or acids; moisturise generously with the emollient we recommend, as often as the skin feels tight; wear a broad-spectrum SPF 50 every day and reapply, and avoid direct sun, sunbeds and hot holidays while healing; no exercise, saunas, steam rooms, swimming or hot showers for 48 hours, sweating and heat aggravate the skin; avoid make-up for 24 hours, then use only clean, non-irritating products; pause retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs and any other active skincare until we tell you it is safe to restart; take the antiviral medication as prescribed if you are prone to cold sores; expect one to two weeks at home while the skin heals and crusting resolves; follow the prescribed dressing, ointment and cleansing routine exactly, several times a day; attend every review appointment so healing can be monitored closely; strict sun avoidance and daily SPF 50 for at least six months.
